Safe transfers and manual handling

If you need help with transfers, this is the part that matters most. Poor manual handling technique injures the person being supported and the worker doing the supporting, and it’s one of the most common causes of preventable harm in home care.

Our support workers are trained in safe manual handling and we follow the equipment and techniques set out in your plan — hoists, slide sheets, transfer belts, or whatever has been assessed as right for you. If an occupational therapist has specified how a transfer should be done, that’s how we do it.

If your needs change, or a transfer that used to work has become difficult, tell us. It usually means a reassessment rather than pushing through.

What we support with

Personal care — showering, dressing, grooming, toileting and continence support, delivered with privacy and without being rushed.

Transfers and mobility — moving safely between bed, chair, wheelchair, shower and vehicle.

Transport — to appointments, work, study and social activities, including support with wheelchairs and mobility aids.

Community access — being out and part of things, with a worker who knows which venues are actually accessible and which just claim to be.

Domestic assistance — keeping the home functional and clear of obstacles.

Nursing and clinical care — including pressure area care, wound care and continence management where needed.

Working alongside your therapists

Most people we support with physical disability also have an occupational therapist, physiotherapist or exercise physiologist involved. Support work runs better when it reinforces what those clinicians have set up rather than quietly working against it.

We’ll follow therapy programs, use equipment as prescribed, and flag it when something isn’t working in practice so it can be reviewed properly.

We support NDIS participants, TAC clients, people with Home Care Package or Support at Home funding, and privately funded arrangements. Our allied health and nursing services can also be arranged directly.
